Calculation of Electron Atom Collision Cross Sections - I.

Abstract

The report contains the results of the first systematic attempts at close coupling calculations of selected electron impact excitation cross sections in atmospheric atoms and ions. Cross sections are presented for the transitions among the terms of the ground state configuration of atomic nitrogen, and for excitation of terms of the 2s2p(3p) configuration of NIV and the 2s2p configuration of OIII. Because of the limitations of the eigenfunction expansions used and the restricted computations that have been carried out, the results presented in this report, except when explicitly noted, have to be considered preliminary until more thorough verifications for some transitions can be carried out.
