Proton-Activated Recession Sensor (PARS). Volume II.

Abstract

The program investigated the migration of Be7 radioactive sources within graphite. Data on the implantation of the Be7 sources and other studies were documented in Volume I of this report. The migration phenomena seen in that earlier work are reviewed and summarized in this report. Additional high-temperature tests were performed and one possible method of inhibiting diffusion was investigated. These investigations showed that diffusion of Be7 in graphite appears to occur at temperatures above approximately 4,000F and can be sufficiently understood to permit evaluating feasibility of a shape-change system using Be7 in graphite as a function of trajectory and geometry. The Be7 proton-activated recession sensor (PARS) concept was tested for (1) ablation, (2) source mobility effects, and (3) extreme temperature and pressure distribution. (Author)
