Collective Interactions of a High-Current Gas Discharge in a Plasma of Low Density,

Abstract

Experimental results are presented concerning plasma instability occurring at the initial stage of the electrode plasma discharge when the plasma is rare. The collective processes are shown to be similar to those in case of interaction when injecting an external electron beam into plasma and differ greatly from those occurring in a plasma of high density and hith rate of ionization immersed in a strong electric field. The analysis of the experimental results suggests that the collective processes might have an important influence upon the breakdown mechanism of a neutral gas. (Author)
