Development of a Zero-G Gauging System.
Abstract
The ultimate objective of this project is the development of a zero-g gauging system based on the absorption of gamma radiation. The numerous subsystem parameters of a nucleonic gauge were interrelated in closed form and subjected to appropriate tradeoff analyses and optimation routines to synthesize gauging systems capable of meeting the prescribed performance parameters. Particular emphasis was placed on achieving high levels of accuracy (1 percent or better over the entire range of full- to empty-tan conditions) with gauges configured completely external to spherical tanks fueled with cryogenic fuels. Nucleonic gauges capable of meeting the prescribed requirements were subjected to preliminary designs and critical subsystem elements were verified with laboratory testing. (Author)
