Abnormal Host Responses in 'S.mansoni' Infection.

Abstract

In an attempt to better understand the clinical and pathological characteristics of the glomerulonephritis in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis, studies are reported. Histological studies obtained from cases of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis with and without clinically diagnosed nephraopathy revealed the existance of a wide spectrum of glomerular lesions. Those observations suggested a high prevalence of kidney disease in those cases with a wide range of clinical and pathological presentations. The effect of Hycanthone upon the isolated lysosomal membranes from livers of normal mice was studied. The drug produces lability of lysosomal membranes which was dose dependent. In a separate experiment, the effect of Hycanthone upon mitochondrial respiration obtained from livers of normal mice was investigated. There was a clear inhibition of oxygen consumption, and the specific activities for succinic dehydrogenase and alpha-cetoglutarate were also markedly depressed. As the S.mansoni infection produces a similar effect, it is of great interest to study this effect of therapy in animals with Manson's schistosomiasis.
