Information and Responses Toward a Deindividuated Uniformed Person.
Abstract
The effect of information on various responses of subjects to a deindividuated uniformed person was investigated. Subjects rated the person on a measure of perceived agressiveness, several semantic differential scales; and on a measure of attraction. It was found that subjects who rated the uniformed stranger after viewing his photograph tended to rate him generally more favorably, those who received ten informative neutral statements about him tended to rate him more unfavorably, and those who received neither information or both a photograph and informative statements tended to rate him variably. The results suggest that information about a uniformed stranger (e.g. either a serviceman or a policeman) does have considerable effects on how he is perceived, and what actions are expected of him.
