Estimation of Reliability after Corrective Action on Observed Failure Modes,

Abstract

The paper is concerned with a problem that may arise in the final stage of development of an expensive item: The item has been developed to a point where it is hoped that its performance and reliability are suitable for its intended application, and it is then subjected to a series of N tests to demonstrate this performance and reliability. When the N tests have been completed only S successes have been achieved, and possibly the nominal reliability, R = S/N, may be considered unsatisfactory. However, the causes of some or all of the N-S failures have been discovered and corrective action has been taken to eliminate the corresponding failure modes. Now one would like to 'take credit' for the improvement in reliability that was achieved by this corrective action. (Author)
