Projectile Penetration Through Rheopectic Fuels.

Abstract

A program was conducted to study the effects on the penetration of .50 caliber projectiles though JP-4 jet fuel into which a visco-electic additive had been mixed. The additives tested were FR-3 obtained from the Western Company and B-200 obtained from the BASF Company. The amount of additive varied from 0 to 1% and projectile velocity varied from 1200 to 2800 feet per second. In addition, the effects of PGB-6 'whiffle balls' in a tank of JP-4 were also determined. High speed motion pictures provided a means for visual study of internal tank phenomena. Framing rates up to 11,000 frames per second were used. Piezoelectric pressure transducers were used to measure transient fluid pressures during penetration. Neither of the additives tested nor the whiffle balls had any significant effect on the deceleration of the projectiles or the pressure pulse transmitted to the fluid. (Author)
