The Effect of Speed of Wheel Drag in Soil,

Abstract

An approach to the problem of soil-wheel interaction is presented that takes into account the effect of soil inertia forces on wheel performance in general and on wheel drag in particular. A method is described that couples particle path measurements obtained by flash X-ray techniques with the differential equations of plasticity to provide a model for the analysis of rigid wheels traveling at high speeds. Results of analyses using the model are in good agreement with available experimental data and show that drag load and wheel velocity are not monotonically related. (Author)
