Investigation of Modification of Surface of Powdered Silica Gel,

Abstract

The purpose of the present work was the investigation of the effect of some factors on the progress and the degree of modification of powdered silica gel. As the modifying substances mono-, di-, and trimethylchlorsilanes and primary alcohols, containing from 3 to 8 atoms of carbon (mainly the butyl kind), were used. The principle of their interaction with the surface of silica may be schematically represented. Also discussed is the effect of the treatment on silica used in filled elastomers.
