Automatic Cartography Abroad--Status and Problems (Avtomaticheskoe Kartografirovanie za Rubezhom: Sostoyanie i Problemy),

Abstract

The paper contains a review and analysis of the current status and prospects of mapping automation, based on information from the Automation Commission of the International Cartographic Association which met in Paris (June, 1971) under the auspices of UNESCO. One of the most significant conclusions consists of a re-assessment of the role and importance of the caetographer in automatic map compilation. Compilation of complex maps requires: (a) participation of the cartographer in the final adjustment and coordination of the original maps being automatically compiled and, consequently, (b) inclusion of special devices into the automated cartographic systems which ensure a joint survey of the data being mapped, in their automatic compilation and drawing processes, and enable the cartographer to make additions, deletions, or modifications which are simultaneously automatically recorded.
