Confidence in Survivability,

Abstract

The survivability of a military system depends on its design, construction, the threat posed to it by an enemy, and the tactics under which we employ the system. The problem of evaluating survivability with confidence is usually simplified by specifying the hardness required, i.e., the environments the system must withstand without serious degradation, avoiding the time evolving issues of threat and tactics. If the hardness requirements have been chosen wisely, they allow for an acceptable range of tactics on our part to compensate for credible ranges of evolving threats during the effective life of the system.
