Interdiffusion Studies in Some Oxide Systems.

Abstract

Interdiffusion coefficients were determined in the systems MgO-Cr2O3 and MgO-Al2O3. Wagner's analysis and graphical technique were used for the calculation of D. The interdiffusion coefficients increased with the increase in cation vacancies, but the enthalpy of activation was independent of the vacancy concentration. The self-diffusion coefficients of Cr(3+) and Al(3+) in MgO were calculated. Trivalent aluminum ions diffuse faster than Cr(3+) ions in MgO. Interdiffusion coefficients in Mg-Al spinels were given over the temperature range 1565-1900C. (Author)
