The Numerical Solution of Parabolic Equations Applied to 'Eddy Diffusion' in the Ocean.

Abstract

The paper describes the main features of the numerical solution of parabolic partial differential equations with particular application to the 'eddy heat conduction' problem in the ocean. As an example, some direct calculations are made of the 'eddy heat conduction' coefficient from the data of MILOCMED 68 under the assumption that there were no horizontal gradients. Although th assumption does not in general hold it serves to provide a simplified but plausible model to illustrate the numerical techniques. A restricted discussion of the results is given.
