HTPB Polymer Improvement.

Abstract

A series of fourteen experimental R-45 HTPB prepolymers was prepared in an effort to produce an optimum HTPB prepolymer for application in solid propellants. The materials, representative of a range of process conditions, ranged in number average molecular weight from 1800 to 6000, with functionality ranging from 2.0 to 2.7. Polymer and propellant mix viscosity were shown to be related to prepolymer molecular weight, and potlife generally increased with the equivalent weight. The rather wide variations in prepolymer structural properties, however, were not clearly reflected in significant differences in propellant uniaxial tensile properties. Three lots were selected for scale-up processing to permit more detailed evaluation in highly solids loaded HTPB propellant. (Author)
