New Insights and Results Regarding L. F. Richardson's Turbulence Criterion.

Abstract

New and less restrictive filter conditions for the horizontal equations of motion together with the thermodynamic energy equation lead to a more powerful omega-equation in the (x,y,p,t) system. The ellipticity condition for this three-dimensional partial differential equation provides a more general turbulence criterion than Richardson's, which was derived under simplified assumptions. The new condition for the existence of hydrostatic flow also explains the failure associated with the establishment of a certain number. (Author)
