High Temperature Monomers - The Search for Graphite Precursors.

Abstract

A series of disubstituted perylene compounds was studied in terms of their usefulness as monomers for high-temperature polymers and as possible binders for carbon fibers. A group of derivatives of 4,10-perylenedicarboxylic acid was synthesized and their solubilities and thermal behavior studied. In general, the monomers showed excellent thermal stability and in some cases good solubility in dimethylformamide. Methods of synthesis, characterization, and thermal behavior of the monomers are described. (Author)
