Topics in the Analysis and Optimization of Complex Systems,

Abstract

The full power of modern computer-oriented methods in data analysis, operations research, systems analysis, and in general quantitative aids to decision-making has been blocked by the lack of certain interfaces between the true problems and the required problem formulations. The result is is that sophisticated and expensive analyses are often ignored because important aspects of the system were not taken into account, because the criterion function defining optimality was inappropriate, and/or because the results were impossible to interpret. The research discussed herein attacks these problems. The discussion is divided into two categories: (1) Empirical Decision-aiding tools (data analysis); and (2) Postulative Decision-aiding tools (modeling and optimization). Specific emphasis is placed upon the use of difficult-to-quantify aspects of a system and upon optimization with respect to multiple criteria. (Author)
