Thermal Degradation of Perfluoroalkylene-Linked Organosiloxane Polymers.

Abstract

The thermal degradation of two perfluoralkylene-linked organosiloxane polymers has been studied by means of combined pyrolysis-gas chromatographymass spectrometry. The principal degradation products were, in each case, methyltrifluorosilane, dimethyldifluorosilane, phenyldifluoromethane, methane, benzene and toluene. The tendency for these polymers to degrade, at elevated temperatures, by reactions involving transfer of fluorine from carbon to silicon is paralleled by the electron-impact behaviour of their perfluoroalkylene-linked silane precursors.
