Response of the Human Red Cell to Hypertonic Solutions,

Abstract

The response of erythrocytes to changes in the osmolality of nonpenetrating solutes in the suspending solution has been examined by a number of authors. Freezing injury in erythrocytes has been associated with elevated solute concentration. This communication reports on the osmotic behavior of human erythrocytes when subjected to osmolalities ranging from isotonic to as high as 2000 mosm.
