Techniques for Estimating Weapon System Structural Costs.

Abstract

The report presents the results of a study aimed at developing preliminary design-level techniques for estimating the cost of flight vehicle structures that provide sensitivity to the structural concepts and materials used. Two techniques were required: one, a technique that provides relative costs of different airframe structures to introduce costs into tradeoff studies during preliminary design processes and the other, a technique capable of accurately estimating total airframe system costs in terms of manhours and materials, with sensitivity to type of material and construction, for chosen designs. Representative approaches as described in available literature on cost estimating techniques were investigated, a detailed assessment of certain specific estimating approaches was made, and methods were developed and demonstrated.
