Reflectometer Diagnosis of Thin Boundary-Layer Plasma Sheaths.

Abstract

A multiple-probe reflectometer technique is developed to diagnose the detailed structure of the boundary-layer plasma formed on high-performance reentry vehicles. This technique uses aperture reflection coefficients measured onboard at three discrete frequencies to determine an equivalent exponential electron density profile. Particular emphasis is placed on the turbulent boundary layer of a ballistic, hypersonic reentry vehicle at low altitudes. Aspects of the design are discussed; and system parameters are recommended for implementation. Data analysis programs are described. (Author)
