Development and Construction of an Instrument to Detect Fissionable Materials.

Abstract

A radiac set (AN/PDR-69) for surveying areas contaminated with fissionable materials has been developed for use in the field under adverse environmental conditions. Eight prototypes have been constructed; several of these have been subjected to environmental testing at Air Force Weapons Laboratory with generally satisfactory results. A scintillation probe, with pulse-height analysis, serves for selective detection of L X radiation or low-energy gamma radiation emitted by the contaminants or their daughters. A digital display indicates the counting rate in the pulse-height window. Design and development studies are discussed. Physical and operational characteristics of the instrument are described.
