Development of Composite Technology for Dynamic Component Application.

Abstract

In this program, composite materials were used in the fabrication of a CH-47 pitch link (a heavily loaded tension-compression member in the dynamic flight control system. A dual-load-path structure was designed. HT GRAPHITE WAS SELECTED FOR THE PRIMARY LOAD MEMBER, S-901 glass for the secondary member, and high-tensile carbon-steel wire for the hoop windings in the metal end- fittings. Semiautomatic production techniques were evaluated and refined during fabrication of the two specimen pitch links as a means of reducing the cost of the components. The completed specimens were tested and evaluated by the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center. (Author, modified-PL)
