Shock Compression and Release Behavior of Two Nevada Test Site Tuffs.
Abstract
The Hugoniot equations of state and several release curves have been determined for tuff samples from two underground test sites, Hudson Moon and Diana Mist. Flat plate impact tests were performed on samples in the in-situ state of water saturation. No large difference in the dynamic behavior of the two tuffs was found. An effect is observed when the air-filled-void volume was increased from two to eight percent. A large difference between the dynamic (this work) and the quasi-static (Reference 1) uniaxial strain curves is observed. At a given stress, the static measurements show about two percent greater compression. (Author)
