Intensity of Scattered Light from Large Diameter Infinite Ice Cylinders in the Normal Plane.

Abstract

An efficient and numerically stable method for calculating the intensity of light scattered from large diameter infinite cylinders with complex indices of refraction is presented. The method is applicable to both oblique and normal incidence; however, only normal incidence is considered in detail here. A comparison is made between this exact theory and approximate methods derived from geometrical optics and diffraction theory. Both Kirchoff and Keller diffraction theories are considered, and the region of the rainbow is discussed in some detail. Results from cylinders with size parameters of 15, 100, 400 and 800 are presented. (Author)
