Abstract

The article discusses the basic ideas and principles of multilevel organization of memory and methods of its dynamic distribution among several programs in the multiprogram work of a digital electronic computer. These ideas found their first application in second generation computers and attained a determining influence upon the equipment part and the operational part of a digital electronic computer in third generation computers. A short description is given of stores of various levels: external stores, high speed stores, buffer stores, superhigh speed stores. Consideration is given to questions of memory protection.
