A Technique for Evaluating the Effectiveness of Motor Vehicle Fog Lamp Systems.

Abstract

The report is the presentation of a technique for evaluating the effectiveness of motor vehicle fog lamp systems. The evaluation criteria are based on the effective visual acuity of the driver under night fog conditions. The study is divided into two separate experiments. The first involves the laboratory testing of subjects with simulated target lighting and veiling luminance. The second involves the photometric measurements of the lamp systems' illumination characteristics. The results of the two studies are combined to yield, for a variety of lamp systems, a plot of the decrement in average effective visual acuity against distance from the lamps. (Author)
