Segmented vs Conventional Numerals: Legibility and Long Term Retention.
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to answer three basic questions with respect to segmented numerics: are segmented numerics more difficult to read than conventional numerics; if so, can subjects be trained to read segmented numerics at a level comparable to conventional numerics given sufficient practice; and will subjects' reading proficiency of segmented numerics degrade over time without additional practice. The following conclusions are supported by data from the study: at short exposure times seven segment numerics are more difficult to read and require significantly more practice to lower error rates to an acceptable level; and proficiency in reading seven segment numerics shows a significant loss following moderate time (one month) without practice, and longer time periods (four months) without practice produce even greater decrements.
