Nuclear-Generated Plasmas.

Abstract

The report presents a survey of the research activities of a Graduate Research program in the area of nuclear generation of plasmas for potential application to MHD electrical power generation from nuclear energy sources. Described are the development of a new plasma diagnostic tool, the Pulsed Ionization Chamber (PIC), its application to plasma kinetic measurements in high pressure gases of the type and in the pressure range used for nuclear reactor coolants and MHD working media, and to wide-range neutron flux and reactor power measurements (over a range of 10 orders of magnitude).
