Containerized Cable Stowage.

Abstract

Results of a study of containerized cable packaging, storage, and deployment are discussed. Wire rope up to 1-1/2 inch in diameter can be packaged into wire packs of practical dimensions and weights. These wire ropes are pretwistable and thus may be packaged in inside-unwind configurations similar to free-fall payout systems previously developed and successfully operated. The wire packs can be encased in simple containers designed for versatility in handling and storage and as dispensing units during cable laying, mooring, and other operational deployment applications. Continuous wire lengths between 100,000 feet (1/8 inch dia.) and 2000 feet (1 inch dia.) weighing approximately 6000 pounds can be prepared in coil envelopes 40 inches in diameter and 40 inches long and those above 1 inch in coil envelopes within 6 feet x 6 feet.
