Investigation of Electric Arc Metallizing for the Manufacture of M140 Sleeve Support Bushings.
Abstract
The electric arc metallizing process and its application to the production deposition of bushings on the M140 sleeve support was evaluated. Of the many different materials investigated, aluminum bronze was the only one that provided a significant bond when sprayed directly onto a clean steel surface. The bond strength of an electric arc metallized-aluminum bronze coating is approximately 500 per cent greater than that provided by the current flame-spray method of manufacture. Other advantages realized over flame-spraying are (1) the elimination of necessity for a separate and costly nickel-aluminum bond coat, (2) reduction of requirements for machining and surface preparation of the steel tube component, (3) significant reduction of process operating expenses, (4) increase of deposition rates, (5) elimination of preheat requirements, and (6) reduction in amount of aluminum bronze overlay material required per unit.
