Nonlinearities of IMPATT Reflection Amplifiers.

Abstract

The report deals with an experimental and theoretical investigation of nonlinearities in X-Band IMPATT reflection amplifiers. Special emphasis was placed on cross-modulation, intermodulation, and compression effects in single stage amplifiers and on a special cascaded broadband amplifier. The amplifiers were tested with different input powers, signal frequencies, and bias levels. A simple resistive model with two inputs was used for the theoretical work. The experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. No prominent nonlinearities were observed for input powers 20 dB below the saturation power of the amplifier. The nonlinearities of the cascaded amplifier were found to be somewhat reduced in comparison with those of the single stage amplifier. (Author)
