Relationship Between the SAE Smoke Number and Jet Aircraft Smoke Visibility

Abstract

A method was developed using the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) smoke numbers for calculating the exhaust smoke transmission for turbine engines, number of plume paths, and viewing angles. Criteria were developed relating the SAE smoke number to engine airflow and thus to engine size for conditions of visible and invisible smoke. Transmission of multiple plumes was calculated and is presented.
