Lifelong Recurrent Cutaneous 'Herpesvirus hominis' Infection.

Abstract

A unique case is described of an otherwise healthy 23-year-old man with chronic recurrent and widespread cutaneous Herpesvirus hominis infection. H. hominis vesicles have appeared in many areas including the face, ears, thigh, hands, and wrists. Immunological studies revealed slightly elevated serum IgM, low serum IgA, and low herpes-specific IgA and IgG antibody. The recureent nature of the infection may be explained by a mild deficiency in function of the antibody-mediated limb of the immune system, although a specific defect in cellular response to H. hominis antigen has not been ruled out.
