Advanced Ocean Engineering Laboratory Technical Progress Report

Abstract

The semi-annual report reflects the technical status of projects conducted within the Advanced Ocean Engineering Laboratory at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. These projects are: to conceive, design, build and demonstrate the feasibility of large stable floating platforms in the open sea; a program to develop and construct a quartz vertical accelerometer appropriately packaged and adapted for long term ocean bottom or perhaps sub- bottom use; field studies of the water-sediment interface under wave action in and near the breaker zone; and laboratory investigation of the velocity field of breaking waves; use of radio signals scattered from the sea surface to determine the directional spectrum of ocean waves; and a projected two-year laboratory and field investigation of the factors controlling the breaking of mixed-frequency wave systems in deep water.
