Mechanism of Optical Breakdown of Transparent Dielectrics,

Abstract

It is natural to assume that the cause of the breakdown of transparent dielectrics under the action of laser irradiation is due to the presence of traces of atmospheric dust. To prove this assumption, the authors investigated the effect that the purification of transparent dielectrics from dust has on the breakdown threshold of these dielectrics by a focused ray of a ruby laser. The purified dielectric liquids were found to have higher breakdown thresholds.
