Electro-Absorption,

Abstract

The review has shown that electroabsorption may be used as a tool to gain information about (1) the band structure of solids, (2) defect and impurity states, and (3) the phonon spectra in solids. By analysis of the electroabsorption spectrum the band gaps and reduced masses of the electron-hole pairs may be determined. Near indirect edges the electroabsorption spectrum is rich with structure due to either phonon emission or absorption which allows direct determination of phonon energies. Defect and impurity states within the forbidden gap may also be observed using electroabsorption techniques.
