Directional Transformations in Steel - Alloy Development.

Abstract

The study is part of an overall project to develop techniques for producing directional martensite in steel and to assess the properties of such a material. The objective of the work reported herein was to select suitable ferrous alloys. Analyses of the texturing and transformation behavior of austenite were conducted to determine the composition ranges which might be suitable for transformation to directional martensite. On the basis of these analyses, it was concluded that satisfactory alloys would be characterized by a stable austenite with a low M sub s and M sub d and a lath transformation product. (Author)
