Hydrocarbon Type Analysis of Gasoline by Gas Chromatography.

Abstract

A gas chromatographic technique for determining the saturate, olefin, and aromatic composition of motor gasoline has been evaluated. This procuedure extends the capability of a test technique used to isolate the aromatic and saturate-olefin fractions of gasolines through the addition of a dual-column valve, olefin absorber column, humidified carrier gas, and an annular splitter in a 60C temperature controlled oven. In this procedure, two sample injections are required to determine the peak areas attributed to the saturate fraction and to the olefin fraction. The aromatic concentration was determined by comparing the aromatic peak with that of a standard. The remaining concentration of the sample was assigned to the saturates and olefins based on the area attributed to each. This technique and parameters affecting the olefin absorber reactivity were explored and evaluated based on results from the analyses of a standard and two gasoline samples. (Author)
