Basic Studies on the Epidemiology and Protection against Schistosomiasis in Brazil.

Abstract

The findings clearly indicate that for the control of schistosomiasis the use of specific treatment alone, without a periodic application of molluscicide, is not sufficient. Preliminary attempts were made to get antischistosomal effects after application of antischistosomal agents by the transcutaneous route. Promising results were obtained with Oxamniquine (U.K. 4271, Pfizer Limited) in mice and Cebus monkeys, not only as curative but also as prophylactic. After screening 3,500 compounds against B. glabrata, a new potent molluscicide was found: 2,5-Bis(1-aziridinyl)-p-benzoquinone. A concentration as slow as 0.01 ppm was effective in killing snail embryos and newly-hatched snails. For adult snails the LC50 was 0.13 ppm. (Author)
