Report on a Survey of CCU Design, Staffing, and Operating Policies,

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a recent survey of CCU design, staffing, and operating policies. The survey was conducted as part of an ongoing study of CCU effectiveness. The initial emphasis of this study was on development of a system for collection and analysis of data on CCU patients. During 1968-70 such a system was developed; it is currently being used by about 100 West Coast hospitals. Preliminary results from the patient data collection together with frequent expressions of interest by directors from the participating CCUs indicated that there was a need for more information about the design, staffing, and operating policies of the CCUs. A six-page questionaire containing thirty-two questions was designed and sent to each participating CCU during August 1970. The following sections summarize the data received from these hospitals.
