GEK Measurements of Surface Currents in Monterey Bay 1971.

Abstract

Utilizing the geomagnetic electrokinetograph (GEK), surface currents in Monterey Bay were determined for five distinct cruises, each in a different portion of the bay, during the period November to December 1971. These cruises, using the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) research vessel R/V Acania, yielded a total of 90 current speeds ranging from a low of 2.56 cm/sec to a high of 58.16 cm/sec. The direction of the current vectors were compared with currents inferred from the 10C and 12C mean isothermal surfaces. The isothermal surface data used was both of a historical and synoptic nature, the latter being obtained during the November-December 1971 time frame. (Author)
