Measurement and Analysis of the Fluorescence Decay of Gd(3+) in SrF2 versus the Concentration of Codopant Ce(3+).
Abstract
The fluorescence lifetimes of the sextet P(7/2) state of Gd(3+) in the assumed monoclinic (GCl) site and in the tetragonal (C(4v)) site of SrF2 for various concentrations of Ce(3+) as a codopant have been studied. Of particular interest was the GCl site which has been shown to arise in the presence of the Ce(3+) codopant. The excitation and decay modes of the two sites were analyzed in terms of the three-level model. Experimental techniques involved using the 'boxcar integrator' coupled to a logarithmic converter and an analog-to-digital data acquisition system. For the GCl site, strong Ce(3+)5d band adsorption at 2500A with exchange transfer directly to the sextet P(7/2) state of Gd(3+) was determined to be the most probable excitation and decay mode. Adsorption and fluorescence measurements over the Ce(3+) concentration range are also presented. (Author)
