A Study of Charged Particle Motion in a Free Vortex Flowfield

Abstract

A study was made of charged particle motion in a free-vortex flow field to determine the parameters affecting particle motion and to determine the extent to which applied electric fields can influence the particle motion. Four different cases were investigated. These included first, the analysis of the motion of an uncharged particle in a free-vortex; second, analysis of the motion of a charged particle in a viscous medium under the influence of an applied electrostatic field; third, analysis of charged particle motion in a free-vortex under the influence of the applied electrostatic field, assuming the particle is first positively and then negatively charged; and fourth, analysis of the motion of two charged particles in a free-vortex, accounting for field effects due to particle charge.
