Impact of Tire Dynamic Properties on Airplane Landing Gear Shimmy

Abstract

The self-excited vibration of a landing gear (shimmy) is generated in an interplay of effects present in the tire, the landing gear proper, and in the entire airframe itself. The report reviews the significance of the various parameters and urges an industry wide effort to enable better accounting of the tire influences.
