Accuracy of the Mean Threshold in the Psychophysical Method of Limits.

Abstract

Human factors specialists and engineers frequently employ the psychophysical method of limits to evaluate experimental variables in sensory areas. Textbooks list rules for data collection and data treatment with the method of limits which vary somewhat, but have considerable consistency. Analysis indicates, however, that most of the rules are arbitrary, and that they lead to an inefficient use of resources. The present report analyzes the problem of step size, i.e., the spacing between successive stimuli, in the method of limits. (Author)
