Parameter Estimation Algorithms for Digital Systems

Abstract

The general topic of the work reported in the thesis is the use of algorithms for parameter estimation in a digital signal processor. Such an algorithmic approach to the estimation problem follows naturally when principal components of the overall system are digital. Algorithms for performing the decision functions associated with a maximum likelihood estimator are outlined and presented in general terms. The factors important to comparing various algorithmic approaches are defined and discussed. The confidence intervals for various algorithmic parameter estimation approaches are developed and the results of computer simulation of the system presented. It is demonstrated that the error in estimation can be quite small in relation to the pulse length even for the monochrome pulse case.
