A Survey of Stefan Type Problems,

Abstract

The report is an introductory study of free boundary problems for parabolic equations. For simplicity the heat equation is used everywhere in this work. However, many of the techniques presented here can be used in solving free boundary problems which involve some other parabolic equations. These problems have come to be known as Stefan type problems because Stefan in 1889 was the first to obtain solutions of such problems in certain simple cases. These problems often occur as a mathematical model of a physical process which involve a change of phase. (Author)
