Auditory Discrimination in the Chinchilla: I. Reaction Time.
Abstract
Four chinchillas were tested on a frequency discrimination task in a two-way shuttlebox. Tones were presented in dyads, each tone being .75 sec long with .75 sec between tones. A standard was presented once every 23 sec. The positive stimulus (signal for avoidable shock) was a change in the frequency of both tones, the first tone, or the second tone of the standard dyad. Response latencies varied as a function of the temporal position of the changed tone. Changing both tones did not result in better discrimination than changing the first. Responding to the standard and spontaneous responding declined as a function of trials within sessions. (Author)
